… “I’m kind of hoping this will be like running a marathon — you train for it, but you don’t run the whole distance until the actual race,” said Charlie, chatting between rehearsals earlier this week. He said, “I really don’t know what it’s going to do to me physically or emotionally.

Troy Foundry Theater in Troy is mounting a world premiere. It's called “A Shadow That Broke the Light.” It's a 24-hour, one-man show born from the loss of the performer's and playwright's brother. He hopes his work will heighten our awareness of the crisis and lessen the stigma it brings.

Photographer Richard Lovrich recently tagged along with the Troy Foundry Theatre crew as they prepared their upcoming show, “Yellow.” The world premiere of this immersive, haunting and explorative new work directed by Brenna Geffers, was dreamt up in collaboration with Die-Cast, a Philadelphia-based theatre company focused on non-traditional, space specific works.  “Yellow” will put the abandoned space of Troy’s Trojan Hotel to use, leading its audience through the spooky halls to help tell its story of a dream turned nightmare–the moment you realize a dream isn’t your own.

“One of the successes of the production is the relationship between the Fool and Lear. David Girard does not force the relationship as he is content with observing and wisely commenting on Lear’s behavior…

THE BOND BETWEEN THE TWO IS ONE OF THE MORE GENUINE CONNECTIONS IN THE PRODUCTION…”

"The way [Foundry] works is very quick, on its feet, alive and dangerous," says Conallen. "That's all very appealing." A bonus is getting to be part of the premiere of a work by Dresser, whose plays he has seen but not before acted in.

"There's a math to comedy, and Richard is a genius at that formula," he says, adding, "When I first read it, I could see that it was a really smart piece. Now, rehearsing it, we get to find the heart of it, too."

The Capital Region is an area replete with traditional theater companies and established performance venues, often competing for the same audiences and entertainment budgets… One company created with that mission in mind is Troy Foundry Theatre, founded in 2017 by a trio of artists with the common denominator of studying theater at Russell Sage College. Emily Curro, Troy Foundry’s producing executive director (who was recently acknowledged as one of The Collaborative’s Capital Region Creative Under 40 group) says that the site-specific model was a natural fit for the group’s shared interest in devised theater—a modality for creating work through collaboration and improvisation.
